After graduating, you’ll be well on your way to having the information and a bit of experience to begin a successful career in esthetics. However, just like in school when we were growing up, it’s impossible to teach you everything you need to know in esthetician's school.

Here are the top 5 things they don't teach you in esthetician's school that will help give you a successful start to your new career:
1) Full Brazilian waxing. Everyone's body is different in pretty much every aspect. The more you learn about the full Brazilian waxing and how to work around the curves, indentations, skin types and hair types, the more comfortable you will feel and the more confidence your clients will have in your abilities.
2) Product ingredient knowledge and their benefits. I haven't mentioned much about products in our blog series so far but I will here. About skin products - each one of them is different, and each product is a culmination of their raw ingredients. You would be very smart to pick a product type such as cleansers, and look at a bunch of product ingredient descriptions. Discover not only what the purpose is of each of those ingredients but how they can react with other ingredients as well as the potential adverse skin reactions that each ingredient can cause based on skin type. Do this for every product type you can use for a client - waxes, cleansers, oils, and more.
One more thing about raw ingredients - on their own they may not cause adverse reactions, but mixed with certain other ingredients they may cause adverse reactions. For example, mixing ammonia and bleach emits a very foul-smelling and toxic gas called chloramine (so don’t do that!). Becoming completely familiar with each of these points with each ingredient in every product type would make you a product specialist, and this knowledge will be invaluable in your career.

3) Modalities - full information of and how to use most modalities. The way your clients see themselves is also a reflection of your treatment capabilities. This can be a priceless benefit of your knowledge and your treatments. Becoming familiar and experienced with these will help you help your clients make better treatment decisions. This will also help you greatly excel in your field.
4) In-depth skin analysis. The more you know about your client's skin, the skin conditions that exist, and the skin conditions that your client may be prone to are invaluable insights for your treatments. As a licensed esthetician, you can't just treat skin blindly without fully understanding the potential benefits and possible consequences. Mistakes in diagnosis or making incorrect assumptions can be a deal breaker in your career. Becoming more educated in how to conduct thorough skin analysis will give you your best chances for success.
5) How to speak to clients. Just like skin, every client's personality is different. We must understand how to speak with clients so they feel special, loved, accepted, and not at all challenged. We must always treat them with respect, and when we have a specific recommendation that we know can help, we must direct them to that recommendation without aggression towards the proper products, and potentially away from their current regime.
The best way to do this is to point out the specific trouble points their current regime is causing and point out the benefits of your recommendation. We want to be honest about every point, and above all, be sure you are discussing any trouble points your recommendation may have. If there are none (which is rare) then say that. This way the client will know you are on their side and you're approaching it from every angle.
