Waxing Tips And Tricks For Newbies
Posted by Hannah Ullman on Nov 5th 2024
In the world of waxing, especially for those new to the industry, it's easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to find the right techniques and products for your diverse clientele. Not only do you need to choose the appropriate type of wax, but you also need to master the art of making your clients feel comfortable and at ease during their service.
At Honeycomb Wax Co., we understand the challenges estheticians face when starting out. That's why we've streamlined our brand to make it easy to select and understand the waxes and products we offer—from ingredients to where they're made (YAY USA!). Our goal is to support you in providing the best experience possible for your clients.
In this article, we'll share 5 essential tips and tricks to help you create a positive and comfortable waxing experience for your clients, especially those who are sensitive or anxious about waxing.
IF YOUR CLIENT THINKS IT’S GOING TO BE A PAINFUL WAX, IT’S GOING TO BE A PAINFUL WAX.

Tip 1: Establish a Connection Through Conversation
The art of waxing is extremely intimate, and engaging in conversation with your clients can significantly ease their pain and anxiety. A silent waxing session can feel awkward and may make the client feel like you're not fully invested in their experience—but we know you are!
If you're naturally shy or quiet, try using open-ended questions to get the conversation flowing, especially with first-time waxers. Here are some conversation starters:
-
"I'm so excited for you to experience a Brazilian wax! What made you decide to book yours today?"
-
"I see this is your first wax, and I'm so happy I can share so much knowledge about post-wax care and how to maintain your skin between appointments."
For clients who have been waxed before, you can ask:
-
"I see that you've been waxed before; when was the last time? Did you feel like your needs were met with your last esthetician?"
-
"I noticed on your form that it's been a while since your last wax. Is there a special occasion, or are you planning to make this a routine again? Either way, we're always happy to see you!"
By engaging your clients in conversation, you not only make them feel more comfortable but also gain valuable insights into their goals and needs. This is vital for client retention, rebooking, retail sales, and even referrals.
Tip 2: Use Mind Over Matter Techniques
We, as estheticians, know that the sting of waxing is brief, but for the client, that pain can feel significant. Remember, if your client thinks it's going to be a painful wax, it's going to be a painful wax.
Ease your client's anxiety by incorporating breathing techniques on strips you know will be slightly more painful. Our personal favorite is counting out loud (1, 2, 3). Once you say "3," you pull the strip as the client breathes out, and immediately desensitize the area. This method helps the client focus on their breathing rather than the anticipated pain.
Tip 3: Start with the Least Painful Areas
Waxing the inner bum is one of the easiest and least painful areas of a Brazilian wax. Consider starting in the "Cannon Ball," "Knees to Chest," or "Happy Baby" position. This approach not only helps prevent 'locking' hair but also allows you to gauge the client's sensitivity early on, especially with new clients.
Beginning with a less painful area can build your client's confidence and reduce anxiety about the rest of the service.
Tip 4: Involve the Client in the Process
When your client is lying flat on their back in a "frog" or "butterfly" pose (feet together, knees apart), have them pull their skin taut on their tummies. This has nothing to do with weight—skin can always be pulled tighter. Make sure your client understands this.
By giving them a "job" to focus on, you help distract them from any discomfort. This technique not only increases their comfort but also allows you to achieve a cleaner wax (if you're pulling your strip correctly—parallel to the skin). Tight skin reduces the chance of breakage, resulting in fewer ingrown hairs and a smoother finish.
Tip 5: Optimize Your Waxing Technique
Avoid laying large or wide strips onto your client's skin, as longer and wider strips can increase discomfort. Regardless of the strip's size, the quicker you pull, the happier the client will be!
Additionally, knowing your products thoroughly is crucial. Education is key to building your client's trust, and once established, you'll see your retail sales reach new heights. Be prepared to answer questions and provide recommendations for post-wax care.
At Honeycomb Wax Co., we want to see each of you thrive in your business. We hope you'll incorporate these tips into your services to enhance your clients' experiences. Please reach out to our education team if you have any tips and tricks you'd like to share. We always appreciate feedback and love supporting our community.
